Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853–1890) was captivated by cypresses during his convalescence at the asylum in Saint-Rémy. The Met’s Wheat Field with Cypresses (1889), a detail of which is on our apron, is among his exuberant compositions featuring the towering trees. The artist regarded this painting as one of his “best” summer landscapes.
